Equal Means Equal听offers听an unflinching look at how women are treated in the United States today.听Examining听both real-life听stories and听precedent-setting听legal cases, director Kamala Lopez听uncovers听how outdated and discriminatory attitudes inform and influence seemingly disparate issues, from workplace听harassment听to domestic violence, rape and sexual assault to听the听foster care听system, and the healthcare听conglomerate听to the听judicial听system. Along the way, she reveals the inadequacy of present laws that claim to protect women, ultimately presenting a compelling and persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.
Following the film discussion with the audience will include Heather Hardinger, an attorney practicing law in the greater Kansas City area; and Gail James, former Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs at several colleges, and recently retired from KU as Director of Academic Access Center.
