Historian Edward L.Ayers retells the story of the Civil War on a human scale by focusing on two communities in the Great Valley:聽Augusta County, Virginia, and Franklin County, Pennsylvania. During the war, the valley聽saw pitched battles and reprisals.聽In the weeks and months after emancipation, black and white residents tested聽the limits of freedom.聽A book signing will follow the program.
