Treaty at the Ponca Agency
This treaty between Pawnee and Sioux was signed on January 23, 1863, in an effort to restore peace and friendship between tribes.
The Pawnee Tribe once inhabited land stretching from present-day north central Kansas up to the Dakotas. As Native American holdings were reduced under pressure from white settlement, hostilities often broke out between tribes fighting for ever-shrinking territory. This 1863 peace treaty between the Pawnee and Yankton Sioux pledged a cessation of hostilities between the two tribes and the establishment of friendly relations.
