The papers of Charles R. Van Hise (1857-1918), geologist, conservationist, the president of the University of Wisconsin (1903-1918), whose interests extended to vocational education, civil service, legislative reform, and progressive politics. In 1904, as president of the university, he declared that "I shall never be content until the beneficent influence of the university reaches every family of the state," later articulated as the "Wisconsin Idea."

This edition is part of a series of the papers of five major reformers in the 鈥淧rogressive Era,鈥 1850鈥1950: Richard T. Ely, Edward A. Ross, Charles McCarthy, John R. Commons, and Charles R. Van Hise. Each collection is available separately.
