John RossÌý(1790–1866), also known asÌýKoowisguwiÌý(Cherokee, "mythological bird"), was theÌýPrincipal Chief of theÌýCherokee NationÌýfrom 1828–1866, serving longer than any other person. Described as theÌýMosesÌýof his people, Ross guided the former Indian nation through such tumultuous events as the relocation toÌýIndian TerritoryÌýand theÌýAmerican Civil War. This is a selective edition of the papers of the influential Cherokee chief.
