Constantine Samuel Rafinesque (1783 鈥�1840) was a nineteenth-century听polymath听and writer born near Constantinople in the听Ottoman Empire听and self-educated in France. He traveled as a young man in the United States, ultimately settling and teaching at Transylvania University, where he made notable contributions to听botany,听zoology, and the study of听prehistoric earthworks in North America. The American Philosophical Society published 鈥淭he Life of C.S. Rafinesque, A Man of Uncommon Zeal.鈥� Included with the book is a compact disk. with the Rafinesque correspondence.
