Constantine Samuel Rafinesque (1783 –1840) was a nineteenth-centurypolymathand writer born near Constantinople in theOttoman Empireand self-educated in France. He traveled as a young man in the United States, ultimately settling and teaching at Transylvania University, where he made notable contributions tobotany,zoology, and the study ofprehistoric earthworks in North America. The American Philosophical Society published “The Life of C.S. Rafinesque, A Man of Uncommon Zeal.” Included with the book is a compact disk. with the Rafinesque correspondence.
