A selective edition of the papers of Daniel Webster (1782 –1852, the statesman who representedÌýNew HampshireÌý(1813–1817) andÌýMassachusettsÌý(1823–1827) in theÌýUnited States House of Representatives; served as aÌýSenatorÌýfrom Massachusetts (1827–1841, 1845–1850); and was theÌýUnited States Secretary of StateÌýunder PresidentsÌýWilliam Henry Harrison,ÌýJohn TylerÌý, andÌýMillard Fillmore. Webster also sought theÌýWhig PartyÌýnomination for President in 1836, 1840, and 1852. Webster was one of the most highly regarded courtroom lawyers of the era. He shaped several keyÌýU.S. Supreme CourtÌýcases that established important constitutional precedents and bolstered the authority of the federal government.
