Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben (1730 –1794) was aÌýPrussian-born military officer who served asÌýinspector generalÌýand Major General of theÌýContinental ArmyÌýduring theÌýAmerican Revolutionary War. ÌýHe is credited with teaching them soldiers the essentials ofÌýmilitary drills, tactics, and disciplines. ÌýHe wrote theÌýRevolutionary War Drill Manual, the book that served as the standardÌýUnited StatesÌýdrill manual until theÌýWar of 1812. He also served as GeneralÌýGeorge Washington'sÌýchief of staffÌýin the final years of the war. ÌýThis collection contains nearly 4,000 documents from more than 100 institutional sources in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. The papers cover von Steuben’s years in America and include correspondence, legal reports, and dispatches to Congress and state legislatures. ÌýTranslation abstracts for materials not in English are provided.
