Isaac McCoy (1784 –1846) was a Baptist missionary among the Native Americans in present-day Indiana, Michigan and Missouri. This collection is almost entirely concerned with Indian missions, Indian removal, and related matters. A major part of this collection deals with its main theme: American Indians and Isaac McCoy's continuous efforts to establish a better life for them in the West. The collection consists substantially of correspondence and journals written by McCoy while serving as a Baptist missionary among various Indian tribesÌýin the 1st half of the 19th century. McCoy was one of the principal architects of the American policy to move the Indians westward in order to make room for the growing Euro-American population in the East.ÌýHe also played an instrumental role in the founding of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Kansas City, Missouri.
