Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter (1809 鈥�1887) was a听U.S. Representative听from Virginia (1837鈥�1843, 1845鈥�1847),听Speaker of the House听(1839鈥�1841), and听U.S. Senator听(1847鈥�1861). During the听American Civil War, Hunter became the听Confederate States Secretary of State听(1861鈥�1862) and then a听Confederate Senator听(1862鈥�1865) and critic of President听Jefferson Davis. This is a selective edition of his personal and professional correspondence and papers.
