Thaddeus Stevens (1792Ìý–1868) was a lawyer and politician who played a leading role in the formation of the Republican Party. He served as a member of theÌýUnited States House of RepresentativesÌýfrom Pennsylvania and one of the leaders of theÌýRadical RepublicanÌýfaction of theÌýRepublican PartyÌýduring the 1860s.Ìý A fierce opponent of slavery and discrimination against African-Americans, he sought to secure their rights duringÌýReconstruction. Stevens was a member of the committee that drafted the articles of impeachment against PresidentÌýAndrew Johnson.
