Thomas Ewing, Sr. (1789Ìý–1871) was Whig politician from Ohio. He served in the U.S. Senate (1831-1836), was appointed as Secretary of the Treasury in 1841, was named the first Secretary of the Interior. In 1849, he served a second partial term in the U.S. Senate. ÌýHe is also known as the foster father of famous American Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman.
