In 1946, photographer Russell Lee went into coal communities located in remote areas across the United States, documenting miners in 13 states, including Utah, West Virginia, Colorado, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming.
The survey was conducted by Navy personnel as part of a strike-ending agreement negotiated between the Department of the Interior and the United Mine Workers of America.

Despite recent scholarly attention to Russell Lee, Lee鈥檚 photographs from this federal project have been rarely studied or exhibited鈥�until now.
is a 3,000-square-foot exhibit showcasing more than 200 photographs taken by Lee in 1946. Visitors and members of the media can access the digitized images in our online and photographs from the exhibit on .
Additionally, visitors and members of the media can from the Power & Light press preview held on March 11, which was attended by descendants of families featured in the survey and Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan.
