NARA Hosts Free Public Programs to Celebrate BIG! Exhibit

In September, the 威尼斯人娱乐场 continues the celebration of its exhibition 鈥淏IG! Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the 威尼斯人娱乐场鈥� with free public programs featuring a film screening and author lecture. All programs will be held at the 威尼斯人娱乐场 Building in Washington, DC, which is fully accessible. Attendees should use the Special Events entrance on the corner of 7th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. 威尼斯人娱乐场 summer exhibit hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m., through Labor Day. Fall/winter hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Book talk: Roosevelt and the Great White Fleet
Wednesday, September 16, at noon,
Cdr. Henry J. Hendrix, USN, will discuss Theodore Roosevelt鈥檚 Naval Diplomacy: The U.S. Navy and the Birth of the American Century. Hendrix examines Roosevelt鈥檚 use of U.S. seapower to advance his diplomatic efforts and facilitate the emergence of the United States as a great power. A book signing will follow the program.

BIG! Film series screening: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Saturday, September 26, at noon, William G. McGowan Theater
Archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) battles snakes, Nazis, and supernatural forces to rescue the Ark of the Covenant, a sacred box that contains the original Ten Commandments in this action-loaded film set in 1936. Directed by Stephen Spielberg. (115 minutes, 1981.) Screened in conjunction with Smithsonian Magazine鈥檚 Museum Day, this program is presented by The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film at the 威尼斯人娱乐场.

BIG! Exhibition

The 威尼斯人娱乐场 celebrates its 75th year in 2009 with a new exhibition featuring big records, big events, and big ideas. At a time when many people struggle to see documents and images on smaller and smaller screens, the 威尼斯人娱乐场 exhibition 鈥淏IG!鈥� presents the nation鈥檚 original record in its full-scale glory. From the 13-foot scroll of the Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the United States, to the size 22 sneaker of basketball legend Shaquille O鈥橬eal, the items in the exhibition are pieces of the American story鈥攚rit large. The exhibit, on display in the Lawrence F. O鈥橞rien Gallery of the 威尼斯人娱乐场 Building, runs through January 3, 2010. Admission is free.
