WHAT:

Washington, DC…Experts in Open Government, technology and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) will join the ˹ֳ’ Office of Government Information Services (OGIS) to celebrate the Freedom of Information Act’s 50th anniversary and Sunshine Week with an afternoon program. Speakers include experts from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, ˹ֳ, Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, American University, MuckRock, GovTrack, Demand Progress, 18F, and the New America Foundation.

Highlights include:

  • Panel discussions on “Using Technology to Open Government from the Outside” and “Technology and Innovation from Inside Government”
  • 15 minute in-depth talks from thought leaders on “The Future of Technology and Open Government.”

The Office of Government Information Services (OGIS) is a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) resource for the public and the government. Referred to as the FOIA Ombudsman, OGIS was created within the ˹ֳ when the OPEN Government Act of 2007 amended the Freedom of Information Act (5 U.S.C. § 552). OGIS began operations in September 2009, and is charged with providing services to mediate disputes between FOIA requesters and Federal agencies; reviewing policies and procedures of administrative agencies under FOIA; reviewing agency compliance with FOIA; and recommending policy changes to the Congress and President to improve the administration of FOIA.
