Thomas Bragg听(1810听鈥�1872) was Governor听of North Carolina听from 1855 to 1859 and a U.S. Senator from 1859 to 1861. During the听Civil War, he served as Attorney General in the听Confederate States Cabinet. The diary of Bragg is broken intothree periods: 1861 January 3-March 1, in Washington, D.C., as a U.S. senator from North Carolina during the secesson crisis; 1861 November 5-1862 April 9, in Richmond, Va., as Confederate attorney general; and 1862 April 11-November 7, as a private citizen living at Petersburg, Va. The diary records congressional sessions and conversations with other politicians; Confederate cabinet meetings; and reactions to war news (including the battles of Hampton Roads and Shiloh).
